HIGHER SPEED THROUGH MORE CONTROL.

Redeveloping every single component of the ARC 1100 DICUT wheelset, drag and steering moment are reduced as a result of the redesigned AERO+ rim, the aerodynamically optimized 180 DICUT Ratchet EXP hub and the two reinvented aero spokes. The cyclist benefits from excellent aerodynamics and safe steering behavior, gaining decisive advantage.

Report OF THE ARC 1100 DICUT® Performance

LOW DRAG, EXCELLENT SAILING EFFECTS AND CONTROLLED HANDLING.

All ARC wheels with AERO+ rim profiles have a similar behavior in headwinds, but start to differ in increasing crosswinds. The rule is: the higher the rim and the larger the angle of inflow, the greater the propulsion.

DRAG

IN CORRELATION TO RIM HEIGHT

In headwind conditions, all ARC wheels show a similar result of around 13-14 watt; a low drag performance in headwind conditions (yaw = 0°; base drag). At a lateral airflow of 18° yaw, the ARC 1100 DICUT 80  reveals the best sailing effect with around -7 watt. Similarly, the ARC 1100 DICUT 62, with a negative drag of around -3 watt, still enables cyclists to benefit from a supporting propulsion. The ARC 1100 DICUT 50, with the lowest rim height in the ARC range, is the best controlled wheel at all relevant yaw angles.

steering moment

IN CORRELATION TO RIM HEIGHT

Depending on their rim height, all ARC wheels have excellent steering moment behaviors at various yaw angles:

A low profile ARC 1100 DICUT 50 has, of course, the lowest steering moment of the new wheels. The stall is more abrupt, but the wheels remain more controllable than wheels with a higher rim profile.

Even with rim profile heights of 80 mm and 62 mm, the ARC wheels deliver controlled handling. This becomes particularly evident in the linear and steady increase of steering forces and in the controlled stall (> 20°), which prevents strong changes in steering movement.

With their low steering moments, all ARC wheels remain stably controllable, enabling the cyclist to stay in the faster aero position for longer.

competitor analysis

DRAG

1. The ARC 1100 DICUT 50, with around 13.8* watts, clearly has the lowest drag in headwind conditions (yaw = 0°; base drag) compared to its competitors. It demonstrates an excellent sailing effect, delivering a weighted aero drag performance of 10.5* watts; the best aerodynamic performance of all tested wheels with a similar rim height.

2. The ARC 1100 DICUT 62 demonstrates the lowest drag values at any yaw angle with a difference of up to 2 watts over its competitors. Compared to wheels with a similar profile height from other manufacturers, the ARC 1100 DICUT 62, with 8.9* watts weighted aero drag, achieves an extremely low value (lower = better). This is the only wheelset with negative drag, providing thrust at around 14° yaw.

3.  The ARC 1100 DICUT 80 wheel delivers the best sailing effect among the ARC wheels. While competitors reduce drag with crosswind (up to yaw = 16°), they do not reach the negative drag range. In contrast, the ARC pushes the cyclist forward with negative drag of up to -7* watts.

REDESIGNED RIM SHAPE

THE AERO+ OPTIMIZED RIM SHAPE LEADS TO ENHANCED AIRFLOW BEHAVIOR.

CFD simulation of the new ARC wheel shows all important forces acting on the redesigned rim. The geometry, optimized using the AERO+ concept, makes the wheels predictable, and therefore controllable and fast due to the late stall and minimal turbulence on the rim. Additionally, the new rim shape benefits from the forward pushing sailing effect at crosswind.

CFD OPTIMIZATION

The CFD optimization of the ARC rim with 62 mm height aims to minimize turbulence, achieving the longest possible flow attachment along the rim.

  1. Little turbulence occurs at the transition area between rim and tire so that the air continues to flow along the rim.
  2. The airflow follows the shape of the rim for as long as possible along the rear edge of the tire leading area to delay stalling.
  3. The airflow attaches for as long as possible at the tire of the rim leading area.
  4. Riding direction
  5. Airflow (10° yaw)

REDESIGNED RIM SHAPE

The greater clearance allowed by the disc brake system opened up new horizons for the development of the rim shape. The rim shape has a more bulbous body, converges to a pointy end and has a hooked bed. The inner rim width of the ARC wheels increases up to 20 mm to be able to mount a wider tire for less rolling resistance and greater comfort without sacrificing aerodynamic advantages.

Reinvented spokes

NEW SHAPES WITH A HUGE POTENTIAL FOR OPTIMIZING ROTATIONAL DRAG.

The new aero shapes of DT aerolite II and DT aero comp II, combined with the aerodynamical alignment through the T-heads, reduce rotational drag up to 1.1 watt. Optimized based on the AERO+ concept, they contribute to an increased overall speed. The spoke material of both spokes has been compressed more during the flat forging process, resulting in increased tensile strength.

REINVENTED SPOKES

  1.  DT AEROLITE II: light spokes stand for excellent aerodynamics and high tensile strength. The dimension of the new aero shape is 35 % wider and 23 % thinner compared to DT aerolite.
  2. DT AERO COMP II: stable spokes are developed for high lateral stiffness and maximum traction. The new DT aero comp II features a more aerodynamic cross-section area compared to the DT aero comp.

drag difference

REPORT ON DRAG DIFFERENCE IN CORRELATION TO WHEEL LEVEL

For all three rim heights, there is a difference between the two model variants ARC 1100 DICUT and ARC 1400 DICUT in terms of overall drag. The differences are mainly explained by the new aero shapes of the DT aerolite II and DT aero comp II spokes reducing rotational and translational drag significantly in the ARC 1100 DICUT wheels (shown in the chart). In general, the smaller the rim height, the greater the influence of rotational drag due to longer spokes.

ARC DICUT 50: due to the lower friction of the new spokes with medium air, the ARC 1100 DICUT has reduced rotational drag (-1.1 watts) compared to the ARC 1400 DICUT.
ARC DICUT 62: the higher rim shape shortens the spoke length and reduces rotational drag. This explains the smaller difference of -0.9 watts between the model variants.
ARC DICUT 80: the high profile rim of 80 mm makes even the smallest difference (-0.8 watts) in rotational drag noticeable. At first sight, this may sound insignificant but it still contributes to the best overall aerodynamics within the ARC 1100 DICUT range.

REMASTERED HUB
180 DICUT®

AERODYNAMICALLY IMPROVED THROUGH REDUCED SHAPE OF THE HUB BODY.

A positive side effect: the slimmer hub body with smaller flanges and cut-outs on the Center Lock mount reduce the weight of the 180 DICUT hub by 11 g compared to the previous aero hub. The Ratchet EXP system and the low-friction and durable SINC ceramic bearings (orange rings) increase the value of the high-end hub to a maximum.

THE RATCHET EXP SYSTEM

The patented Ratchet EXP hub sets a new standard with unique features in high-performance hub technology:

  • EASY MAINTENANCE of the hub and simple conversion to different free hub body systems. Thanks to their notches, endcaps can be easily disassembled for a hub service.
  • LESS WEIGHT thanks to the reduced number of components as a result of the fusion of ratchet and threaded ring.
  • SUPERIOR RELIABILITY due to the firm connection between the inner ratchet ring and the hub body ensuring precise engagement.
  • LONGER SERVICE LIFETIME due to a greater distance between the bearings (resulting from the fusion of ratchet and thread ring). The hub is 15 % stiffer, leading to less wear because of reduced movement.
